Instead of using a traditional white backlight, to illuminate the LCD panel, this Sony-unique feature uses clusters of red, green and blue LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights instead. This prevents the bleaching of dark tones and increases the depth of colour possible.
These LEDs can be locally dimmed too, so picture contrast is improved and blacks and shadows actually appear as dark as they should.
Selective dimming also reduces the amount of energy consumed by the TV when compared with equivalent LCDs. So this feature is good for the viewer and good for the environment too.
