High resolution sensors
High performance, high resolution sensors lie at the heart of α quality image capture.

Maximising the creative potential of the α lens line-up, they pick up extraordinary detail that’s rich in colour, highlight and contrast, providing the BIONZ processor with optimum visual information with which to ‘craft’ finished photographs.
Your α sensor will either be a CCD (α230, α330 and α380) or a CMOS (α700 and α900) with resolutions that vary by model.

Both systems have large sensors (full frame ‘35mm’ size in the case of the α900) to capture each scene with total accuracy.

The CCD features an RGB primary colour filter for crisp high definition image capture with wide tonal range and subtle colour gradations. And the large APS-C sized sensor offers superior sensitivity with exceptionally low noise.

The Exmor CMOS sensor runs additional processes such as analogue to digital conversion and Sony noise reduction technology that ‘cleans’ the signal output (both before and after conversion) to ensure crisp, sharp images even when shot at high ISO settings. And a 3-layer low pass filter preserves high resolution detail while suppressing moiré effects and colour artefacts.
