Underwhelming with no mid-range

XS-GS1621C 06 May 2020 by Carrera911xc (USA)

Paired these components with their class d mini amp (4x45rms) and a Sony xav1000. I almost couldn't believe my ears. Where did all my midrange go? The tweeter sounded great, but the woofer had absolutely no life above 600hz. Not exactly ideal with a crossover set to 5000hz. Figured maybe I was underpowering the woofers, so I left the tweeters on the Sony amp, and put the woofers on a bridged 4 channel running 2x200 rms. This helped clean up the low end but no matter how much eq/rta I tried, they just wouldn't come to life. I ended up having to add a midrange speaker(Italian Faital FE35 @ $30 each) and running the front 3 way active with a dsp. With the woofers crossed at 550hz, the system finally sounds decent. Of course with the Sony headunit preamp being only 2V output, and their mini amp being the only car audio amp on sale without gain control, all gain adjustments had to be done through the dsp. Couple this with the Sony amp's signal noise ratio of 83db, and now there is an audible hiss out of the tweeters when not playing music. What was originally supposed to be a 2 way passive budget build, turned into a 3 way active build. A build in which the Sony components are limited to the function of having the amp and crossovers serve as paperweights, the headunit is only there to feed a weak signal to the dsp, and the speakers cover the ultra wide range of 75-550hz (woofer) & 5500hz+ (tweeter). If it wasn't for Corona I would have given up a long time ago.

Very good sound~!

XS-GS1621C 12 October 2018 by Op7G (USA)

Very clean and clear sound. Surprised a lot of old-school car audio people who thought Sony had gone to junk since the whole X-plod fiasco. I've actually tried the GS amps and subs and they are all top-notch. In this case, I later upgraded to HAT Unity, which I found had stronger mid-bass in my particular doors. The Sony tweeters were of same performance as the HAT, sound quality-wise; however, I found the HAT Unity tweets to be way too loud even when reduced by 3db. I was very pleased overall with the Sony set and would not hesitate to buy them again for another vehicle or recommend them to others.

Sony Quality at a unbeatable price!

XS-GS1621C 22 February 2018 by TroyAudi0 (USA)

I got a set just to get something better in my daily driver, I added the GS1621c to the front of my Chevy Sonic, I then added the RM-X7BT to connect my phone to the basic audio in my car, after a few weeks of enjoyment I added the GS amps and subwoofers! man my car sounds better than ever!! Thanks Sony for making a great product that did not drain my wallet. My professional installation on the full setup insured my products would have a great warranty and properly set sound!
