Why is the standby mode and system suspend (power saving) disabled on Windows 98?

Applicable Products and Categories of This Article

Why is the standby item missing from the shutdown menu of Windows?
or
Why is the system standby item not displayed in [Always On] in the properties of [Power Management] on [Control Panel]?
or
If I select [Yes] on the error message window of Advanced Power Management saying "Computer entered into standby modes several times to stop response. Do you want to set it not to enter standby state from now on?", my computer becomes unable to enter into the standby mode and the system suspend (power saving). Why is this so?

This symptom occurs because you have selected [Yes] in response to the message saying "Computer entered into standby modes several times to stop response. Do you want to set it not to enter standby state from now on?" that appears at the startup time after the execution of shutting down the machine by turning off the power switch while Windows 98 was in operation.

--Remarks--
If a device or a program that prevents Windows from entering into the power saving mode exists, the system fails to enter into the power saving mode.

--Example--
The symptom occurs when Windows enters into the power saving mode in the following state:
- When a DV device is connected and DVgate still/motion is in operation
- When a peripheral device or a program that does not support the power saving mode is used

To avoid this symptom, you have to uninstall [Composite Power Source] and [Advanced Power Management] in the [Device Manager] tab of [System Properties] in the Safe mode and install them through the installation of automatic search of hardware after the restart of the system.

Please refer to the procedure below:

--Procedure--
1) Turn on the computer.

2) Keep pressing the [Ctrl] key when the Sony logo appears.

3) Select [Safemode] in the window of Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu.

4) Double-click the [System] icon in [Control Panel] after the startup of the system in the Safe mode.

5) Select the [Device Manager] tab from the [System Properties] window to open [System Devices].

6) Uninstall [Composite Power Source]. When the system prompts you to restart the system, select [No].

7) Uninstall [Advanced Power Management] and restart the system.

8) After the system restarts, double-click the [Add New Hardware] icon in [Control Panel].

9) Click [Next].

10) Select [Yes (Recommended)] to go to the next step.

11) Click [Next] and the automatic search starts.

12) When the search is completed, click the [Details] button to check if [Advanced Power Management Support] appears in the [Searched Hardware] box. Then click [Finish].
